Discovery Games

The game “My IoT: A Discovery Game” was created as part of the CDP NEED for IoT initiative and the IRT Nanoelec training program. NEED for IoT, which lays the groundwork for sustainable nanoelectronics, develops methodologies that integrate economic analysis, geopolitical issues, and the acceptability and sustainability of new technological solutions, applying them to the design of components that support the Internet of Things.
The game was developed by Laetitia Thomas as part of her role as an educational engineer for the NEED for IoT project. She adapted the game created by her colleagues at Slow Fashion Forward—Maureen Dickson, Carlotta Cataldi, and Crystal Hodges—titled “My Garment: a discovery game,” to address the challenges of the NEED project, namely anticipating and supporting a sustainable transition in the field of nanoelectronics.

Given the relative success of the “My IoT” game, the project aims to expand the impact of this game—as well as this methodology—across various industries: microelectronics, textiles, and cosmetics.  We aim to accelerate the impact of “My IoT”; professionalize “My Garment: a discovery game”; and adapt the offering for the cosmetics sector with “My Cosmetic: a discovery game.”  Additionally, we plan to create a new game called “Business Plan for Peace.” The ultimate goal of these interactive games is to raise awareness and foster a shift in mindsets and behaviors in an accessible, creative, and engaging way.

In addition to content design and graphic design, it is necessary to create an interface where games can be downloaded under a CC-BY-SA license. We plan to conduct a benchmark analysis of similar offerings to refine the product’s positioning and optimize search engine optimization (SEO).  Next, marketing efforts will be undertaken to tailor the offering to each target audience and to communicate with the three different target groups. Finally, a business development initiative will be launched to promote the games through workshops.

Learning Objectives

  • Share knowledge and learn from each participant's unique experience and the group's collective intelligence.
  • Learn about the environmental and social impacts of the supply chain.
  • Gain a systemic understanding
  • Foster cross-disciplinary skills, for example, to understand the complexity of the world in its scientific, ethical, and civic dimensions.
  • Practice collaboratively developing scenarios for the future aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs—developed by the UN) and reflect on how to foster peace and contribute to the sustainable development of our society.
  • Bringing about behavioral changes. We are all consumers and can have a positive impact by adopting mindful and sustainable consumption habits.
