The InterCCom Project

serious game

interccom

Launched in 2019, the InterCCom project is developing a hosting platform for serious games focused on learning and research in the humanities and social sciences. Called GenaGame, this platform allows researchers to design and publish games without any prior development experience. These games are used in training contexts and also serve to collect research data.

The InterCCom project originated with an early serious game, produced in 2019 by Anne Bartel-Radic and Danielle Taylor with funding from Idex Formation. Called LINK, this initial experiment features a multicultural team in a corporate setting, with the player serving as the coordinator. As such, the player must make decisions and organize the work among people with different cultures, customs, and work habits. This game can be used to raise awareness and train teams on the challenges of multiculturalism in the workplace and remote work, thereby improving their efficiency and productivity. In parallel with this training initiative, the GenaGame platform records and stores the actions and responses of the teams undergoing training, in order to build a dataset that researchers can use to refine and validate their findings.

Following the success of LINK, and taking advantage of a platform that is now operational, other researchers have begun developing serious games focused on their own research. GenaGame is thus gradually expanding its training and data collection offerings, becoming a full-fledged service for researchers around the world. Researchers can use the platform to design the scenes, media, and paths that make up their games themselves, and collect usage data from them. Numerous scientific publications have been produced based on data from GenaGame:

  • Kaiyu, Y., V. Ribière, and A. Bartel-Radic, "Understanding knowledge-hiding behaviors in the workplace using a serious game data collection approach," Online Journal of Applied Knowledge Management, vol. 10, no. 3, pp. 27–45, 2022.
