Based on the integration of modern technologies, the industrial systems of the future combine performance, flexibility, and productivity. However, they are characterized by increased autonomy and a vast amount of data produced and processed, which can lead to poorly controlled decisions and ethical risks. These risks, which arise from the inappropriate use of data or reactions triggered by AI, can affect various levels—human, organizational, societal, and environmental. Focusing on the areas of governance and continuous performance improvement, the ETHICS40 project addresses the management of ethical risks associated with the operation of industrial systems of the future. In partnership with NTN Europe, a bearing manufacturer and equipment supplier, the project aims to develop a tool—ETHICS4IF (Ethical Risk Assessment and Management for Industry of the Future)—an operational software prototype that enables the identification of ethical risks and their integration into the management and performance improvement of future industrial systems. Since ethics is a concept rooted in moral philosophy—and one that is difficult to grasp in the field of engineering—the ETHICS4IF tool will be the result of discussions led by a multidisciplinary team that includes specialists in applied ethics.
