A challenge for science, a challenge for society

CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. Reducing its concentration in the atmosphere is a major challenge facing our society.CO2 capture and utilization is one of the three proposed courses of action. This solution is not currently being implemented because the processes are energy-intensive, the technologies are underdeveloped, and there is a lack of socio-economic vision surrounding these processes.

DefiCO2 was formed around an interdisciplinary team spanning the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, engineering, socio-economic sciences, socio-technological sciences, and the humanities and social sciences. The organization and governance of the DefiCO2 consortium—comprising 13 laboratories, involving 5 UGA research clusters, 4 LabEx programs, the EUR-CBH, and industrial partners—are designed to foster optimal synergy.

Objectives: Capturing and utilizing atmosphericCO2 to produce fuels or basic chemicals using carbon-free energy sources represents a significant scientific challenge. DefiCO2 will lead to breakthrough solutions and emerging technologies through a shared vision among scientists with diverse areas of expertise. The inclusion of researchers in the social and economic sciences will enhance understanding of the political and economic issues associated withCO2 capture.
