Abstract

This doctoral research aims to understand the role of awareness in the effectiveness of different types of nudges, with a particular focus on the potential mediating role of elaboration level and situational reactance. Based on the thought system involved (system 1 vs. system 2), the hypothesis is that nudges activating system 2 (slow, analytical) would induce greater elaboration than nudges activating system 1 (fast, automatic). This elaboration, reflecting a greater awareness of the nudge, could induce a situational psychological reactance detrimental to the nudge. We also examine two potential moderators: concern for the environment and the reactance trait. This work, based on at least two experiments, is part of a desire to better understand the underlying mechanisms of nudges in order to refine our understanding of them, specifically by answering certain theoretical questions and empirical findings formulated in the existing literature.
