ANR Contract Completed
A Study of a Cohort of Technology Commercialization and Transfer Agreements to Identify and Analyze the Factors Explaining Their Outcomes
Objective
The COCON project aims to analyze a cohort of contracts as a corpus of “objects” related to the commercialization of research results (agreements, contracts, services) drawn from the experience of two universities (Grenoble and Strasbourg) in order to develop indicators that will shed light on the commercialization strategies of research stakeholders, the factors contributing to the success or failure of these various “objects,” and their socioeconomic impact in terms of innovation (outcomes of commercialization for academic stakeholders, job creation, business creation, spillover effects in existing companies, societal impact, etc.)
Researchers in Management Sciences, Law, and Applied Economics will therefore study the data provided by research commercialization stakeholders at the Universities of Grenoble and Strasbourg regarding the “projects” under commercialization and, in particular, how contracts or agreements address the exploitation of the results obtained (licenses, patents, etc.), cooperation or partnership agreements for research projects (intellectual property, rules for exploiting results, etc.), and service contracts.
Based on indicators to be developed during the project, the aim will be to compare the nature, strategic motivations, and outcomes of these different types of commercialization initiatives, and to assess the relevance of the “objects” and the stakeholders’ rationales within which they are embedded, in light of the results in terms of innovation. To this end, field surveys will be conducted to gather the perspectives of the stakeholders involved in these contracts or agreements, in order to compare their perceptions with the actual results. The work plan is therefore organized into four main tasks designed to capture the objects and strategies of valorization in an interdisciplinary manner and analyze them in terms of socioeconomic innovation:
- Task 1 – Development of a classification system for commercialization contracts and the economic provisions of such contracts
- Task 2 – Technology Transfer Performance
- Task 3 – Governance and Commercialization Strategies
- Task 4 – Synthesis, Deliverables, and Dissemination
